I decided to start re-encoding my DVD/Blu-ray rips into AV1. This is more future proofing right now, as the only device that has AV1 hardware decoding I have is the Steam Deck.

I use MakeMKV for the original rip and Handbrake to encode into a Matroska container again, passthrough the audio and subtiles. I also set it to upscale, but limit the resolution to DVD NTSC the resolution for the DVD rips, so for a 2.3:1 aspect ratio, the resolution was 1104:480. I set it to use AV1 and not AV1 10-bit and use the same frame rate.

I had to un-check all the burn-in subtitles options, as MKV supports subtitles in the container.

When comparing the original file and the new one on my desktop using VLC, there was significant splotches/blocks on the original and none with AV1. It looks great on the Steam Deck OLED using Jellyfin Media Player. Streaming the files from Jellyfin server running on TrueNAS SCALE.

Do you have the same issue with .265?

I just started an encode of an 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray rip using 10-bit AV1 on my Steam Deck; it started without crashing. It could be that my Haswell CPUs just can't handle encoding 10-bit AV1.

It would probably be best that I use 10-bit for everything and just wait until I have a more powerful desktop CPU for encoding my Blu-rays.
